Cowgirls Split Doubleheader With Arkansas
October 23, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER ---- Oklahoma State Softball split its doubleheader with a 9-5 win and a 4-3 loss against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium.
Â
In the first game, the Cowgirls jumped on Arkansas and put up four runs in the first inning. Junior Vanessa Shippy, sophomore Taylor Lynch, junior Rylee Bayless and senior Kristin Reasnor all reached base and all scored to give the Cowgirls the early 4-0 lead they wouldn't give up.
Â
The Cowgirls drew eight walks and had nine hits in the first game on their way to the victory.
Â
"It's part of the reason we scored nine runs," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "When you get free bases, especially with a team like we got, we can run. So we can expose you fast."
Â
Shippy, Bayless and junior Maddi Holcomb all scored twice for the Cowgirls. Shippy went 1-for-2 with two walks, and Bayless went 1-for-1 with three walks.
Â
"As leadoff batter, your role is to get on base," Shippy said. "I make sure I see a few pitches, and then if we can get her to throw as many pitches as she can she is going to get tired."
Â
Reasnor and junior Jessi Hafner each came through with clutch hitting for Oklahoma State as they tallied three RBIs apiece. Reasnor currently leads the team this fall with 15 RBIs.
Â
Junior Whitney Whitehorn earned the win for the Cowgirls in the first game as she had her longest outing of the season, four innings, and moved to 2-0 on the fall. Whitehorn gave up just two runs with one strikeout in the win.
Â
"It was a really good test for myself to see where I'm at," Whitehorn said. "And see how I can pitch when they see me more in the lineup."
Â
In the second the game, the Cowgirls once again managed to get on the board first with two runs in the first inning. Junior Alex Edinger drove in Shippy and Bayless with a two-run double.
Â
The Cowgirls got on the board again in the fifth inning when Edinger came around to score. She went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored in the loss.Â
Â
Bayless continued her strong day as she went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run scored in the second game.Â
Â
Shippy managed to reach base all four times she came to bat in the second game.
Â
"Shippy is our spark plug," Gajewski said. "And then Bayless and Edinger are kind of in a class all by themselves. They play with their hair on fire, so we are lucky to have them."
Â
With the split, the Cowgirls moved to 5-2 on the fall.

Up Next: The Cowgirls conclude the fall on Wednesday when they play host to Butler County. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. with free admission.
