Cowgirls Prepare For Seminole State
October 18, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER ---- Oklahoma State Softball returns to action tonight when it takes on Seminole State at Cowgirl Stadium.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. with free admission.
This is the Cowgirls first of four games this week with games against the USSSA Pride and a doubleheader against Arkansas lined up to conclude the week.
"It's a great experience," sophomore Taylor Lynch said. "It's good for everybody. For transfers and newcomers it's a good test for what the spring will be like. I think this is a big week for us and a good learning experience. Whether we do good or bad it's going to be a positive either way as far as learning goes."
Oklahoma State (3-0) takes its nine-game fall winning streak under coach Kenny Gajewski dating back to last season into the game against the Trojans.
Thus far 2016 Big 12 Player of the Year Vanessa Shippy has led the Cowgirls at plate. The junior from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, has posted an impressive .750 batting average on nine hits and four RBIs. Shippy had a career first last week against Connors State as she hit for the cycle on a 4-for-6 night in which she batted in four runs.
"She's a kid who can do it all," Gajewski said. "She takes a lot of pride each day in what she does. She's capable of doing anything here. Nothing that she does surprises me. She continues to take those steps that great players do."
Newcomer Alex Edinger has also put up strong numbers three games into her Oklahoma State career. The junior from Claremore, Oklahoma, is batting .533 on eight hits with five RBIs and three stolen bases.
As a team, Oklahoma State has six batters hitting north of .300 on the fall.
In the circle the Cowgirls have relied on the staff format to pick up victories. Junior Whitney Whitehorn, sophomore Christina Biggerstaff and senior Brandi Needham have combined to post a 0.00 ERA on 21 strikeouts with each picking up a victory in the fall. Freshman Logan Simunek has improved every game out of the bullpen with a 3.00 ERA on six strikeouts. All together Oklahoma State pitchers have combined to hold opponents to a low .179 batting average.
Following tonight's game, the Cowgirls turn their attention to the final games of the fall schedule. Oklahoma State hosts the USSSA Pride of the National Pro Fastpitch League on Thursday, a doubleheader with Arkansas on Sunday and Butler County next Wednesday.
The game against the Pride is $10 with a limited number of standing room only tickets being sold starting at 5 p.m. Fans who can't make the game can watch on okstate.com/live.
The remaining games to conclude the fall are free.
