Cowgirls Defeat Seminole State
October 18, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER ---- Oklahoma State Softball used an early offensive surge thanks in part to a key Kristin Reasnor home run to earn a 17-5 win over Seminole State on Friday at Cowgirl Stadium.
The Cowgirls scored eight runs through the first two innings, capped with Reasnor's grand slam to straight away center field in the second to give the Cowgirls an early 8-0 lead they wouldn't give up.
Junior Rylee Bayless reached base safely in all six of her appearances, going 3-for-3 with three walks. Bayless improved her fall batting average to .533.
"We need to continue to play clean, we haven't done that a whole lot," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Pitching wise we have to clean some stuff up."
Freshman Hayleigh Galvan started the scoring effort for the Cowgirls with a two run, two out single in the first inning to help Oklahoma State to a 3-0 lead after one.
Junior Vanessa Shippy smashed a two-run triple to center in the sixth to score junior Taylor Pence and junior Maddi Holcomb to make it 13-3.
The Cowgirls picked up four more runs in the seventh inning thanks to multiple clutch hits from Oklahoma State batters. Holcomb doubled scoring junior Jamie Lowrie and Macy Fisher to cap the scoring.
Oklahoma State added runs in every inning outside of the fourth.
Freshman Logan Simunek made her first career start for the Cowgirls going two innings giving up no hits and striking out two. Simunek also picked up her first career win.
"I was really excited and kind of nervous," Simunek said. "I just had fun with it and pitched how I knew how to pitch.
Sophomore Taylor Lynch went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. She also showed off her versatility in the field as she got her first appearance at first base.
Overall, Oklahoma State now has six batters hitting better than .400 on the fall with Shippy leading the way at .667 on 10 hits.
With four fall games behind them, the Cowgirls now turn their attention to the second half of the fall schedule as they look to finish on a strong note.
"These last four games are probably the most important," Lynch said. "It's going to be a good learning experience, we feel confident and we are ready for the spring to start."
Oklahoma State will face the USSSA Pride of the National Pro Fastpitch League on Thursday.
"It's a great opportunity to measure up where we are," Gajewski said. "That is the premiere team in the pro league, it's going to be fun, and I'm excited to see how our pitchers and hitters will compete."
