October 16, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team turned in another strong day at the ITA Central Regional Championships Sunday, as the doubles tandem of senior Carla Tur Mari and junior Vladica Babic advanced into the doubles draw finals, while Tur Mari and freshman Aliona Bolsova tallied victories to each move through to the singles semifinals.
The region's top-seeded duo of Tur Mari and Babic won its fourth and fifth consecutive matches Sunday to earn a shot to play for the regional championship Monday morning. The pair dropped Tulsa's Rongrong Leenabanchong and Martha Matoula, 8-3, in the quarterfinals Sunday morning before dispatching of Oklahoma's fifth-seeded Byrne and Miyazaki, 7-6(2), 6-0 in the semis. Babic and Tur Mari will look to add the program's third-straight regional doubles title when they take on Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Nina Khmelnitckaia of Kansas Monday at 9 a.m.
The young gun Cowgirl duo comprised of freshman Aliona Bolsova and sophomore Sofia Blanco came up short in the quarterfinals Sunday, falling to Bernard-Feigenbaum and Khmelnitckaia, 8-4, wrapping up an impressive weekend for the two underclassmen.
Tur Mari and Bolsova remain alive in the doubles draw, both tallying wins to move into Monday's semifinals.
Bolsova continued her run through her first regional tournament Sunday, having little trouble with Bernard-Feigenbaum, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. The win sets up a Bedlam matchup with fifth-seeded Lily Miyazaki of Oklahoma in the semifinals, which is set for Monday at 11 a.m.
Tur Mari tallied another big win Sunday afternoon, grinding out a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 win over Shannon Hudson of Arkansas to follow up her victory over Babic in the round of 16 on Saturday. The Ibiza, Spain product will take on No. 3 seed
Anastasia Rychagova out of Kansas, who knocked off Cowgirl sophomore Katarina Stresnakova in the quarterfinals, for a spot in the finals.
Both Tur Mari and Bolsova are aiming to be the fourth-straight Cowgirl to earn a regional singles championship, a streak that began with Kanyapat Narattana's title in 2013. The Cowgirls as a team hope to sweep the event in both doubles and singles for the third consecutive season.
