Cowgirls Win Fourteen on Day Two of ITA Regionals

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team won 14 total matches to advance five singles players into the round of 16 and three doubles teams into the round of 32 at the ITA Central Regional Championships Friday afternoon in Minneapolis, Minn. Meanwhile, seniors Katarina Adamovic and Viktoriya Lushkova came up short in their matches at the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif.

The day started in doubles for the Cowgirls competing in Minnesota. The top-seeded duo of Vladica Babic and Carla Tur Mari were the first to advance into the round of 32 with an 8-6 win over Missouri's Brianna Lashway and Clare Raley. Lena Ruppert and Katarina Stresnakova followed Babic and Tur Mari's win, handling Jieke Stroobant and Sydney Wolfe of Northern Iowa, 8-4, to move to 3-0 as a pair.

Entering the weekend at 5-1 after an impressive week at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships last week, the No. 2 seeded Oklahoma State tandem of Sofia Blanco and Aliona Bolsova continued their momentum and finished off an undefeated day in doubles for the Cowgirls with an 8-4 victory over Adorabol Huckleby and Aimee Tarun to advance.

The Cowgirls continued their roll in singles, picking up 11 wins in two rounds to advance five players into Saturday's round of 16.

Babic, the tournament's top seed, picked up a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Kansas State's Maria Pamaite in the round of 64 to set up a Bedlam matchup in the following round with Oklahoma's Ann Selim. Babic would make quick work of Selim, however, shutting out the Sooner freshman, 6-0, 6-0, to advance through to the round of 16.

Babic will face Cowgirl senior Carla Tur Mari on Saturday afternoon for a trip to the quarterfinals after Tur Mari won a pair of matches as well Friday. Tur Mari dropped Northern Iowa's Gisela Kemper, 6-1, 6-3, in the round of 64 and Maria Toran-Ribes of Kansas, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 32.

In the Cowgirls' 11th singles match of the weekend at regionals, Katarina Stresnakova was the first to drop a set, but she would bounce back to take the match from Kansas State's Palma Juhasz, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. The Cowgirl junior would follow up the win with another, this one over Serena Nash of Oklahoma, 6-0, 6-1.

Freshman Aliona Bolsova will compete in Saturday's round of 16 as well after two more straight-set wins this afternoon. Bolsova knocked off Minnesota's Camila Vargas Gomez, 6-1, 6-1, before a 6-2, 6-3 tally over Tate Schroeder of Missouri in the round of 32.

Sofia Blanco picked up a pair of wins to become the fifth Cowgirl alive after two days of competition. Blanco handled Kansas State's Millie Stretton, 6-2, 6-2, in her first match of the day before a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 over Zoe Douglas of Iowa to advance.

Freshman Lena Ruppert got a three-set win in the round of 64 over Missouri's Amina Ismail but came up short to Ana Oparenovic of Arkansas in the following match. After five wins in her first two events as a Cowgirl, it was the first loss of Ruppert's collegiate career.

In Malibu, senior Katarina Adamovic was victorious in the the Oracle/ITA Masters round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over sixth-seeded Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State. Adamovic would fall, however, to the No. 3 seed, North Carolina's Sara Daavetilla, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Senior Viktoriya Lushkova fell just short of advancing Friday afternoon, falling in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to Baylor's Blair Shankle, who was competing as the No. 9 seed.
