Cowgirls Record Perfect First Day in Singles at ITA Masters, Regionals

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team opened its weekend with an undefeated day of singles competition the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif., and the ITA Central Region Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., Thursday, not giving up a set all day to post a combined 8-0 singles record.

Seniors Katarina Adamovic and Viktoriya Lushkova both advanced into the Oracle/ITA Masters round of 16 with a pair of straight-set wins on Thursday.

Seeded eighth, Lushkova defeated No. 25 seed Liza Fieldsend of the College of Charleston, 6-1, 6-1, to move on. Lushkova has been on an impressive hot streak going back to last season. The Ukraine product has tallied wins in 24 of her last 25 singles matches and is 4-1 in matches against ranked foes so far this season. Lushkova will face ninth-seeded Blair Shankle of Baylor in the round of 16 Friday.

In her first match of the weekend, Adamovic defeated Furman's Ansley Speaks, 6-4, 7-6(3). Adamovic is coming off a round of 16 appearance at last week's Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, and will take on No. 6 seed Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Both Lushkova and Adamovic were winners in the first round of mixed doubles as well. Lushkova teamed up with Yuya Ito of Texas to knock off Boston U's Sabrina Faybyshev, 6-2. Adamovic and partner Gergely Madarasz of Purdue were victorious, 6-4, in their first-round match. Both would go on to lose their second-round matches, however.

The Cowgirls went a combined 6-0 in Minneapolis, advancing all six entered players into the round of 64.

The field's top seed, junior Vladica Babic was the first Cowgirl to move into the round of 64 with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Creighton's Michaela Henne. Babic has been impressive so far this fall, racking up a 5-1 mark in singles with her lone loss coming in the round of 16 last weekend at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.

Senior Carla Tur Mari followed shortly after Babic's win, taking down Cassidy Spearman of Missouri, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Katarina Stresnakova dropped Arkansas State's Tori Roberts, 6-2, 6-1, to advance through to the round of 64 and move to 4-2 on the season.

A pair of Cowgirls moved to 4-0 in their young Cowgirl careers to advance to Friday's round of 64. Sofia Blanco would down Julie Gauguery, 7-6(5), 6-2. Lena Ruppert was triumphant over Iowa's Carin Runefelt, 6-1, 7-5, in her first match of the weekend.

Freshman Aliona Bolsova finished off the perfect day for the Cowgirls with a 6-0, 6-3 win over SIU-Carbondale's Meagan Monagnan.

Action at the ITA Central Regional Championships is set to get underway Friday morning at 8 a.m. with doubles, followed by round of 64 singles. Masters round of 16 play is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. CT in Malibu.
