Shippy Hits For Cycle In 10-1 Cowgirl Win
October 11, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER -- Oklahoma State junior Vanessa Shippy hit for the cycle as the Cowgirls beat Connors State 10-1 Tuesday night at Cowgirl Stadium.
Shippy went 4-for-6 and finished the game with four RBIs, two runs scored and one stolen base. She completed the cycle when she hit a three-run home run in the 10th inning.
"I've actually never done that in my entire life," Shippy said. "I love that [my dad] wasn't here because he's not going to believe me."
Oklahoma State coach Kenny Gajewski was pleased with his team's effort and especially Shippy's performance.
"I wish we could play 10 innings every night," Gajewski said. "Shippy could get six at-bats and she would probably hit for the cycle more often."
The Cowgirls got off to a slow start and only scored three runs through the first six innings.
Oklahoma State still managed to get two runs in the second but Gajewski said the team should have gotten more if it weren't for a couple of base running mistakes.
"The second inning was just a comedy of errors with base running," Gajewski said. "Part of that's on me, on encouraging them to push the envelope, but I also want them to push it being smart."
The Cowgirl bats got hot later in the game, with sophomore Taylor Lynch getting the rally going with a single in the seventh inning. Junior Rylee Bayless would go on to score Lynch with a triple, and Bayless would come in to score on senior Kristin Reasnor's single.
Reasnor would come up big again in the ninth. She had a two-run single to give herself three RBIs on the night.
"We just found a way to just keep grinding through and taking good at-bats," Gajewski said. "Finally we got some things to happen."
Senior pitcher Brandi Needham earned her first win of the fall. She went three innings with two strikeouts and no runs. Needham pitched out of two jams in the second and third innings, leaving five runners stranded.
"I forgot about everything that happened and just focused on the next batter," Needham said. "Whenever I did, I threw strikes, got it done and got ground ball outs."
The Cowgirls (3-0) are now 128-12-2 in fall games since 2000 and 9-0 under Gajewski.

Up Next: The Cowgirls return to action Oct. 20 when they play host to the USSSA Pride of the National Pro Fastpitch League. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. with limited tickets still remaining.
