January 05, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team enters the spring season ranked No. 12 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, it was announced today.
"The preseason rankings are a reflection of the fall season our girls had and the hard work that they put in," coach Chris Young said.
All six Cowgirls who competed in fall competition received spots in the ITA national rankings. Four Cowgirls are ranked in singles and three Cowgirl pairings are ranked in doubles.
The Cowgirls are highlighted by the No. 9 doubles pairing of Kelsey Laurente and Maria Alvarez. The senior duo were not ranked in the fall, but after capturing the ITA Central Region title and an impressive performance at the National Indoor Championships, the Cowgirls are one of the best pairings in the nation.
The singles rankings feature four Cowgirls within the top-100 players in the nation.
"It's a good starting point for the spring, but we are looking forward to working hard and accomplishing more as the season progresses," Young said.
Katarina Adamovic holds the No. 27 spot after a fall season that saw her win the ITA Central Region Championship inside the Greenwood Tennis Center. Adamovic also defeated top-seeded Danielle Collins of Virginia at the National Indoor Championships in New York.
Vladica Babic earned the No. 38 position in the preseason poll. Babic took home the singles title at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic in her fall finale.
Viktoriya Lushkova checks in at No. 46 in the ITA rankings. The Cowgirl All-American looks to build off of a year in which she was named Big 12 Co-Player of the Year.
Laurente is one of the biggest movers in the polls, ranked No. 89 after being unranked last season. Laurente is the reigning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari are ranked No. 23 in the doubles poll after putting together a 7-3 record in fall competition.
Babic and Tur Mari are ranked as the No. 38 duo after reaching the finals of the Dick Vitale Classic in their only weekend of competition together during the fall.
The Cowgirls will begin their spring season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. and Oral Roberts at 6 p.m. inside the Greenwood Tennis Center.
