Throwers Carry OSU at DeLoss Dodds Invitational
January 23, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
MANHATTAN, Kan. – It was a big day for the Cowgirl throwers and the OSU freshmen Saturday at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas, as the throwers accounted for nine top-10 finishes for the Cowgirls and the freshmen picked up six top-five finishes across both squads.
"I think we had some highlights today," coach Dave Smith said. "Chase was fantastic in both of her events, Savannah and Kaytlyn in the 1,000 both looked really good and the men in the 1,000 looked pretty good, but we've still got some work to do. This was a rust-buster for us and we have to be ready to go next week because it will be a good opportunity to face stiff competition in a good facility and we have to take advantage of that."
Chase Ealey led the way and had another great showing in the Ahearn Field House.
Five Cowgirls participated in the weight throw competition and three set personal bests. Ealey led the competition with her 18.36m/60-3.00 throw from her fifth attempt, which was the winning mark. It was the second time this season that Ealey set a personal best at Kansas State, and her throw put her on another Cowgirl top-10 list with the mark slotting in at fourth all-time in the women's weight throw.
Freshmen Aina Maartensson (14.99m/49-2.25) and Baylor Nelson (12.42m/40-9.00) set personal bests as well, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
Ealey won the shot put with a throw of 15.70m/51-6.25. She was the highest finisher of the four Cowgirls in the event. Kehl and Zarankaite followed Ealey in second and third, and Nelson grabbed eighth.
On the track, Danielle Coleman topped her season's best in the 600-yard run with a 1:26.73 that got her third place overall. By surpassing her previous season best by nearly three seconds, Coleman moves within a second of claiming a spot on OSU's all-time list.
In the men's 600-yard run, Ryan Wheatley made his season debut and led the Cowboy runners with a 1:13.26. He won his heat and finished third overall as one of five Pokes in the top-10. Freshmen Chance Galloway, Brayden Brock and Tenton Daniels took fifth, sixth and seventh, and All-American Brandon Singleton finished ninth.
Two-time All-American Savannah Camacho and freshman Kaytlyn Larson finished one and two in the 1,000-meter final. Camacho, who was making her season debut, ran a 2:52.78 to take the win and claim the No. 2 time in the Big 12 this season when adjusted for track size. Larson passed her season's best from over a month ago by four seconds, running a 2:53.03 and picks up the No. 4 spot in the Big 12.
"Kaytlyn is doing a fantastic job," Smith said. "She's just a freshman, but she's going to be a big asset to this team. She's been really good and just keeps getting better."
Three Cowboys picked up top-five finishes and a fourth finished eighth in the men's 1000-meter run.
Newcomer Tre'Tez Kinnaird's 2:28.72 won him the race in his Cowboy debut and freshmen Bryce Balenseifen (2:29.81) and Miles Yapp (2:31.85) finished third and fifth, respectively.
"Miles might have gone out too hard in the beginning, but he's a great aggressive racer and I really like that," Smith said. "Bryce was great too, so our freshmen group is doing a good job so far."
Brigham Hedges was the fourth Cowboy entered in the race and he took eighth with a 2:33.81.
Jacob Fincham-Dukes continued his good run of form, finishing fifth in the long jump competition. The freshman has improved his season's best at each competition so far with Saturday's 7.10m/23-3.50. At the Texas A&M Invitational he climbed into the OSU all-time best list, but this mark replaces his previous jump that was sixth best in school history.
With the DeLoss Dodds Invitational wrapped up, OSU turns its attention toward one of the biggest meets of the season. The next meet on the schedule for the Pokes is the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, January 29-30.
