2016 Cowgirl Softball Position Previews: Catcher

STILLWATER – Junior Miranda Cavin and freshman Berkley Faulkner represent the catching crew for the Oklahoma State softball team this season.
The Cowgirls boast a seasoned veteran in Cavin, who has started at catcher in 86 games over her two-year career, and a fresh upcoming talent in Faulkner, who joins the squad after a decorated reign at Duncan High School in Duncan, Okla.
Cavin, a junior from Elk Grove, Ill., stands as one of the Cowgirls' most experienced players going into 2016. Cavin started at catcher in 51 games last season, receiving a multitude of on-field involvement with returning pitcher Brandi Needham.
"Miranda has accumulated a lot of experience at catcher during her time here, and that experience is going to pay dividends," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "She knows our pitchers well, and she's someone we can count on behind the plate."
Defense played a large role in Cavin's game, as she threw out 23 of 32 attempted base stealers in 2015. At the plate, Cavin registered eight RBIs and drew 11 walks last season, in addition to hitting .261 during Oklahoma State's fall campaign.
The newest backstop of the Cowgirls' staff comes in Faulkner, who made eight appearances in the fall. The Duncan, Okla. Native posted an on-base percentage of .429 and recorded 32 putouts in limited action, and will look to contribute to the OSU lineup this upcoming season.
Depth also stands as a strong suit at catcher, as the Cowgirls have junior Dre McKee and sophomore Randee O'Donnell at their disposal to step in if needed. Both McKee and O'Donnell made stints behind the plate in 2015.
