STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team began its fall exhibition slate with a victory over Cowley College on Friday, defeating the Tigers, 8-1, at Cowgirl Stadium. With lightning in the surrounding area, the scrimmage was delayed at first pitch and again in the third inning, but the Cowgirls were able to complete nine full innings in just over three hours.

Oklahoma State was effective all across the board, as the team reeled off 16 hits, played solid defense and allowed only two base-hits to the visiting side. Overall, 18 different Cowgirls saw the field, including each of OSU's four freshmen.
After tossing nearly 160 innings last season, Brandi Needham earned the start in Friday's contest. A first-inning single marked the only blemish in three innings of work for the junior, who added four strikeouts in the victory.
Cowley grabbed its only run of the night off of transfer left-hander Kacy Freeze in the fourth, thanks to Jolona Shields' RBI groundout to first. However, Freeze answered with scoreless showings over the next three frames and finished with four strikeouts of her own. Also adding to the victorious pitching effort was Peyton Walker, who tossed a perfect two innings to close out the contest.
Offensively, 11 different Cowgirls recorded base-hits, in addition to five multi-hit efforts across the board. Freshman Taylor Lynch (2-for-3, RBI) lined two doubles in her Cowgirl debut, while fellow youngster Madi Sue Montgomery tacked on two base-hits in her first game in an OSU uniform. Tiffany Mikkelson (2-for-4, RBI), Dre McKee (2-for-4) and Miranda Cavin (2-for-3) each added a pair of hits to the offensive effort.
Oklahoma State will follow up Friday's win with a matchup against NOC-Enid on Wednesday, Sept. 23, set to begin at 6 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium. For more information and updates, follow @CowgirlSB on Twitter.
