STILLWATER – Ingeborg Loevnes and Cerake Geberkidane led the Oklahoma State cross country teams to a clean sweep at the inaugural Cowboy Preview Tuesday morning, with OSU claiming both the men's and women's individual titles and going 3-0 in dual competition.
The Cowgirls started the day by finishing with the top-four times in the 3,000-meter race among 34 women from Oklahoma, Tulsa and Arkansas, ranked first in the south-central region.
Loevnes made her Cowgirl cross country debut and won the event in 10:28.4. She was followed by true freshman Katie Spencer (10:32.2) and two-time All-Americans Savannah Camacho (10:34.0) and Kaela Edwards (10:34.4) in the top four.
"Ingeborg was hurt last season at outdoor nationals, so we're taking it easy with her," coach Dave Smith said. "We don't expect her to be in her top form yet, but from her result today, she looks like a million bucks."
In the dual results, the Cowgirls swept the three other teams, with Arkansas coming in second and taking four of the top 10 spots.
"We were all planning on running as a pack and if we felt it we could push it on the last 1,000 meters," Loevnes said. "It was just fun to run as a team."
The men's race consisted of 24 runners and ended with the same result as Geberkidane led the Cowboys to another team sweep.
"Cerake has had a good year and his approach, maturity and training has gotten a lot better," Smith said. "He's always been talented but I think now he's on a different level mentally and he's really locked in."
The 5,000-meter run saw five Cowboys run top-six times. Geberkidane's 15:34.5 was good enough to take the top spot, while newcomer Josh Thompson (15:36.5) and Vegard Oelstad (15:37.0) rounded out the top-three.
"Before the race we did a three-mile tempo on the track and I didn't feel very good," Geberkidane said. "Going up the hill to start was rough, but after that I just decided to push it because it was only a 5K and I'm used to running 8K and 10K races."
The Cowboys came into the day as the top-ranked team in the Midwest region, while the Cowgirls came in third in the region behind Minnesota and five-time region winner Iowa State at No. 1.
With the Cowboy Preview in the books, OSU's next big race will come Sept. 26, when the OSU Cross Country Course hosts the annual Cowboy Jamboree.
