Cowboy senior makes World Championships debut
Beijing – On the biggest stage in track and field this year, Oklahoma State senior Nick Miller advanced past the qualifying stage early Friday morning at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing.
The decorated cowboy, representing his home nation of Great Britain, threw a 77.42m/254-0 mark on just his first attempt of the day to earn a spot in the final.
"I couldn't be happier for Nick," coach Dave Smith said. "He is one of the hardest working, most dedicated athletes that I have ever met and he is quickly establishing himself as one of the best hammer throwers in the world."
Miller automatically qualified after he finished second in Group A, just behind the thrower with the No. 1 mark in the world, Pawel Fajdek of Poland. Fajdek out-threw Miller by just under a meter, recording a 78.38m/257-2 mark with his second throw.
2015 has been a year of success for Miller as he took home gold in the Sainsbury British Championships, and set a personal best this summer at the Karlstad Grand Prix in Sweden.
"He's still very young for a hammer thrower," Smith said. "He threw the second-best throw of his life for his first ever attempt at a World Championships – that guy has ice in his veins. He has incredible poise and confidence and I know he will be throwing for a medal in the final."
Miller continues his quest for a world title, Aug. 23 at 5:30 a.m. CT. The 2015 IAAF World Championships will be televised live and on tape-delay on Universal Sports and NBC.
