Cowgirls Battle SMU To Preseason Draw
August 14, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State recorded a 1-1 draw against SMU Friday night in a preseason exhibition match at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Â
Both teams scored in the second half, with SMU taking the game's initial lead in the 68th minute on a goal by Geneva Martinez.
Â
However, the lead was short-lived, as OSU netted the equalizer just under nine minutes later when freshman Marlo Zoller blasted a low shot from 22-yards out to the far post to knot things up at 1-1.
Â
"We were losing, and it was a good feeling being my first goal here," Zoller said. "I was going to pass it, but I looked and there was nobody in front of me so I just touched it and shot it when I saw an open goal."
Â
OSU finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots in the match, including a 7-1 edge in the opening half, while SMU held a slight 6-5 margin on corner kicks.
Â
SMU goalies Catie Brown and Shannon Moroney had two saves apiece, while Ashton Hierholzer came off the bench to replaced starter Michela Ongaro in goal for the final 17:11 and recorded OSU's lone save.
Â
Freshman Haley Woodard led OSU with six shots in the match, with four of those on goal.
Â
The two teams did not play overtime, with the game ending after 90 minutes of regulation.
OSU opens the regular season Aug. 23 when it hosts Mercer.
