Former Cowboys Kipchirchir, Vail finish fourth and fifth in 10,000
EUGENE, Ore. – Cowboy freshman Cerake Geberkidane finished second in the junior 5,000-meter final to claim a spot on Team USA Friday at the USATF Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Geberkidane, who represented the U.S. at the Junior Cross Country World Championships back in March, ran a 14:52.87 to take second in the 5,000-meter run and punch a ticket to the PanAm Games in Toronto. With the 5,000-meter spot locked up, Geberkidane will run in the junior 10,000-meter American final Saturday.
On Thursday, former Cowboys Shadrack Kipchirchir and Ryan Vail finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 10,000-meter final.
Kipchirchir, who now runs for the U.S. Army, finished in 28:19.40, while Brooks Running's Vail crossed the line three seconds later in 28:22.21. Both former Cowboys earned a spot in the PanAm Games August 7-15.
Vail earned five time All-America honors before he graduated from Oklahoma State in 2009. Kipchirchir's storied career with the Cowboys ended just a year ago when he graduated with six All-America honors.
Kaela Edwards made the National semifinal Thursday with a 2:04.95 in the preliminary race, which was good enough for an automatic qualifying spot. Although she ran a faster time in the semi, Edwards fell short of a spot in the final. She ran a 2:03.69 to finish sixth in her heat, but she recorded the second best collegiate time in the semifinal.
The junior 100-meter dash featured Cowboy freshman Arlando Brewer-Johnson. The 2015 Outdoor All-American in the 4X100-meter relay ran a 10.81 in the semifinal to finish 13th.
Geberkidane will run in the 10,000-meter junior final at Hayward Field Saturday at noon CT on NBC Sports and USATF.tv for a chance to run for the U.S. in two races at the PanAm Games.
