Noelle Earns Spot in National Final
June 10, 2015 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
Finishes fifth, automatically advances
EUGENE, Ore. -- Chad Noelle advanced to his first outdoor final in the 1,500-meter run Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Noelle's 3:40.91 in heat two of the 1,500-meter semifinal was enough to get the decorated Cowboy an automatic qualifying spot. He finished fifth in his heat, which had the nine fastest times of the day and seven runners move on to Friday's final.
"It doesn't matter whether you win or not, all you have to do is finish top-five," Noelle said. "I wasn't expecting it to be that fast. If our first 300 meters would have been a little faster, everyone would have had a personal best and we would all end up with world class times."
Noelle, who finished fifth in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships, owns the best 1,500-meter time in the NCAA going into his final race of the season with a 3:38.35 from the Payton Jordan Invitational on May 2.
"I have a plan," Noelle said. "The coaches and I have worked on a plan so that I'm ready for any type of race."
Two-time All-American John Teeters, who came into the Championships with the No. 6 100-meter time in the NCAA, did not compete for the Cowboys in both his individual event, and the 4X100-meter relay semifinal due to injury.
The shorthanded Cowboy 4X100-meter relay team still competed amongst the nation's elite, but came up short, finishing 22nd and missing the final. Sharod Selph, Tyler Jackson, Arlando Brewer-Johnson and Brandon Singleton posted a 41.46 out of lane seven.
It was the quartet's first time running together since the Tulsa Duels on March 20, but the group still managed to put up a season best on the biggest stage in collegiate track. With the finish, Singleton receives his second All-America honor, while Brewer-Johnson, Selph and Jackson each receive their first.
Noelle and 5,000-meter finalist Kirubel Erassa will return to action Friday at Hayward Field for the last day of the men's competition. For the Cowgirls, 800-meter semifinalists Savannah Camacho and Kaela Edwards, and 1,500-meter semifinalist Natalja Piliusina will compete in the first official day of the Women's Championships Thursday for a spot in finals held Saturday.
