NCAA Announces Continued Support For Equestrian
July 21, 2015 | Cowgirl Equestrian
WACO, Texas – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced that it has resolved to continue the support and growth of women's collegiate equestrian as an emerging sport.
In October 2014, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics recommended that equestrian be removed from the list of emerging sports for women after 12 years in the program.
In June, the NCAA's new Strategic Vision and Planning Committee (SVPC) reviewed the recommendation and voted that it be tabled thus helping ensure that equestrian remain a viable sport in the NCAA structure.
Equestrian was introduced as an NCAA emerging sport in 2002 with only six schools competing. Today, there are 22 recognized colleges and universities competing at the NCAA level. It will remain an emerging sport until the number of teams passes the 40-team criteria before reaching championship sport status.
