Lushkova Moves on to Round of 32
May 20, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
WACO, Texas -- Oklahoma State sophomore Viktoriya Lushkova advanced in the NCAA women's tennis singles championship after a round of 64 win over 26th-ranked Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M on Wednesday in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
She improves to 25-7 on the year with a 13-3 mark in spring competition.
"I am really proud of the way that Viki competed," coach Chris Young said. "She played great tennis in the first set and lost her way a bit in the second and part of the third, but when she needed it down 5-4 she stepped up and that's why she is special."
In the first set, sophomore All-American Lushkova showed a lot of dominance. After the match was tied 2-2, Lushkova kicked it up, winning four-straight games to cruise to a 6-2 first-set win.
Pierson responded with a quick start in the second set, taking a 5-2 lead over Lushkova. The Cowgirl responded with two wins to keep the set within reach at 5-4, but Pierson capitalized to take the set, 6-4.
In the third set, Pierson grabbed a 5-3 advantage and was serving for the match, putting the Cowgirl in danger of elimination. However, Lushkova responded, winning two games and saving a match point to tie it at 5-all. Another break for the
Cowgirl gave her a 6-5 lead and the serve. The final game was quick as Lushkova only gave up one point to take the set 7-5.
Â
The Cowgirl will seek her second All-America honor in the round of 32 as she takes on the winner of the Kyle McPhillips (UCLA) and Josie Kuhlman (UF) match tomorrow.
Lushkova will also appear in the doubles championship tomorrow with partner Kelsey Laurente. The Cowgirl duo will face No. 25 Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi of Kentucky.
Both matches are at a time to be determined.
