STILLWATER -- Oklahoma State's Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente are primed for this week's NCAA women's tennis individual championships at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The two will pair up for the doubles tournament, while Lushkova will also compete in the singles tournament.
The 2015 Big 12 Player of the Year, Lushkova will make her second-consecutive trip to the NCAA singles tournament after earning All-American status in 2014 when she upset 14th-ranked Olivia Janowicz of Florida, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the round of 16.
So far, the Cowgirl sophomore is 24-7 on the year with a 12-3 mark in spring competition. She will open her singles tournament on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT, facing Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M. Pierson, also a sophomore, holds a No. 26 Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking and has put together a 22-13 record this season. She was recently named the ITA Texas Region Player to Watch.
The winner of that match will move on to face the winner of the Josie Kuhlman (Florida)/Kyle McPhillips (UCLA) match on Thursday, May 21.
In order to earn All-America status, the Cowgirl must win two matches.
The doubles tournament will also begin on Thursday as the 12th-ranked Lushkova and Laurente duo go head-to-head with Kentucky's Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi tandem.
The two Cowgirls hold a 21-9 record this year and were once ranked the No. 3 team in the country, making them the highest ranked doubles team in Cowgirl tennis history. In their last match, the Cowgirl tandem led the No. 6 team of Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan (UF) 7-6 before doubles play was finished.
Receiving an at-large bid, the Wildcat duo are ranked No. 25 in the nation and have gone 6-6 on the season.
The winner of that match will take on the winner of the Hourigan-Woodard (GT) and Fabikova-Susanyi (CAL) match on Friday.
