Young, Steinbock Earn ITA Central Region Coaching Honors
May 12, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's tennis coach Chris Young was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations' Central Region Coach of the Year. Alongside him, the Cowgirl's assistant coach Courtney Steinbock was honored as the Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year. It was announced Tuesday.
Young is receiving his second Central Region Coach of the Year title, as his first came in 2007 while he was at Wichita State.
Young is wrapping up his sixth season with the Cowgirls and a successful 2014-15 campaign that saw the program to new heights, such as a record-high No. 8 ranking in the ITA polls, 15-consecutive weeks in the top 15 and the program's first appearance in the ITA Indoor Championships. This season, Young has led the Pokes to a 23-5 overall record with a 7-2 mark in Big 12 play. Of the squad's 23 wins, 15 have been shut outs. Under his direction, the Cowgirls also went 19-5 against ranked opponents, including a 4-1 win over current No. 4 Vanderbilt. The Cowgirls most recently defeated No. 27 Arizona State to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the women's field expanded to a 64-team draw in 1996. On an individual level, Young saw two of his players earn program-highs in rankings as Viktoriya Lushkova was ranked in singles at No. 10 in January and the Lushkova/Kelsey Laurente duo earned a No. 3 doubles ranking in February.
Steinbock, who has been with OSU for two seasons, has also helped the program tremendously. Her recruiting efforts have helped bring in some of the best players the program has seen, and she has played a key role in the program's success this season.
"I am very happy that Courtney was recognized with this award," Young said. "She has helped our program grow in many ways the past two seasons, and I am glad she has been recognized for her contributions."
Young and Steinbock look to lead the Cowgirls to an NCAA Elite 8 appearance as they take on No. 5 Florida at 4 p.m. CT on Friday at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
