Cowgirl Tennis Shuts Out Boston, Advances to Second Round
May 09, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER -- The 12th-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team defeated Boston University in the first round of the NCAA tournament, 4-0, hosted by OSU at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
"I felt really good about the way we played today," coach Chris Young said. "I think, as I told the girls, in all positions we played some of our best tennis at certain moments. There are things that we still need to clean up but a lot of credit goes to Boston. I thought Boston was a very strong team, and I thought they played with a lot of heart. They played well and gave us a really strong test. All in all, I feel really good about the way we played today. I feel like we have some positive things to take into tomorrow's match."
It is the first time in program history that the Cowgirls (22-5; 7-2 Big 12) have advanced to the second round of the tournament three years in a row. The last three wins at the NCAA Championships were all shut outs.
Due to storms approaching Stillwater, the match was moved to the indoor courts of the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Cowgirls came out strong, winning the doubles point handily. On court two, Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic produced their 14th win this spring as a duo, as they steamrolled Boston's Davis and Craft pair, 8-1. Finishing off the doubles point was the Spanish team of Maria Alvarez and Carla Tur Mari, who controlled an 8-3 match against McCallum and Kostirko on court three.
Play on court one was not finished as Viktoriya Lushkova and Karyn Guttormsen were tied with the Hyoty/Rodriguez tandem, 5-5.
The Cowgirls maintained their ferocity in singles with five of the six Cowgirls winning their first sets.
Sophomore Carla Tur Mari was the first to finish up her match. She notched a quick 6-1 decision in the first set over Iris Lin, before shutting out the Terrier in the second set, 6-0.
Newcomer Vladica Babic won her first NCAA tournament match with ease, taking down Iryna Kostirko in straight sets. Babic put up a 6-3 win in the first set and continued her dominance, winning the second set, 6-1, to stretch the Cowgirl lead to three.
Clinching the match was junior Maria Alvarez on court six. The Spaniard produced a 6-0 win in the first set, and after a long battle to get the final set point, Alvarez prevailed, winning 6-2 and sending the Cowgirls to the second round of the NCAA Championships.
"It's always a great feeling to clinch a match," Alvarez said. "Everyone is just waiting for that moment, so I was really ready for it. It took me a little bit, but I was like, `okay, I got this.'"
Action on courts one, two and four was not finished.
OSU will take on No. 27 Arizona State in second-round action on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
