Cowgirl Tennis Falls to Texas Tech In Big 12 Semifinal
April 25, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
WACO, Texas -- The No. 3 seed Oklahoma State women's tennis team fell in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships to second-seeded Texas Tech, 4-1, on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
"Today obviously wasn't the result we anticipated," coach Chris Young said. "I credit Texas Tech. They played really well. They made a great comeback in doubles. I have to do a better job of getting the team prepared and just feeling confident in the situations where we have to step up. That's my job moving forward with these girls. We want to go back to work these next couple of weeks and prepare for NCAAs better and come out stronger."
The Cowgirls (21-5) dropped a heartbreaking doubles point, as the Pokes led action on court one, 4-1, and court two, 5-2. A ferocious comeback by Texas Tech gave the Raiders the doubles win and a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
In singles, three Cowgirls fell in the first set. Picking up first set wins were Viktoriya Lushkova on court one, Vladica Babic on court four and Maria Alvarez on court six.
Katarina Adamovic dropped a straight-set match on court two to Gabriella Talaba, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.
On court three, Kelsey Laurente fell to No. 114 Sarah Dvorak, 6-2, 6-4, extending Tech's lead to 3-0.
Alvarez kept the Cowgirls' hopes alive with a strong performance on court six. The junior trailed in the first set, 5-2, but stormed back to take it in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3). In her second set, she dominated TTU's Katelynn Jackson, 6-1, to give the Pokes their first point of the day.
Babic's match was forced to a third after the Cowgirl lost the second set, 6-1. She was in the midst of a comeback in the third set, but was bested by No. 73 Lynn Kiro on court four. The Raider win sealed the match.
Play was not finished on courts one and five, with both matches pushed to a third set.
On court five, Carla Tur Mari was just points away from winning her match. She gave up the first set, 6-3, but breezed through the second set to earn her own 6-3 win. She led the Sabrina Federici 5-2 in the third set when the match was decided.
At the No. 1 spot, No. 16 Lushkova won her first set, 6-3, before dropping a 7-5 second set. She led 1-0 in the third.
The Cowgirls will find out their NCAA destination on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
