Four Cowgirls Earn All-Big 12 Accolades
May 13, 2015 | Cowgirl Softball
Four members of the Oklahoma State softball squad have been named to the 2015 All-Big 12 Softball team, the league announced today. Senior Shelby Davis earned first team honors, junior Tiffany Mikkelson landed a spot on the second team and freshmen Vanessa Shippy and Randee O'Donnell were selected to the freshman team.
Davis, a native of Goddard, Kan., is now a three-time All-Big 12 honoree, having also been selected in 2012 and 2014. This season, Davis set career highs in several different offensive categories, including a .440 batting average, a mark that led the Big 12 in 2015 and stands at No. 2 in the OSU record books. She also led the conference with 45 stolen bases, giving her the second-highest career total in school history with 109.
As the team's primary clean-up batter, Mikkelson was an absolute force in 2015, posting top-ten Big 12 marks in walks, RBI, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The junior crushed 13 home runs this season, the second-highest season total in OSU history. The slugger also showed exceptional plate discipline, setting a new single-game school record with five walks against Iowa State.
With the debut of the All-Big 12 Freshman Team, Shippy and O'Donnell also garnered all-conference awards after producing solid freshman campaigns. Shippy, a second baseman from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, used a late-season push to finish the year with a .306 mark at the plate. With 30 walks added in, she was able to compile a .432 on-base percentage, giving her the third-highest all-time mark for a Cowgirl freshman.
O'Donnell, a freshman from Tahlequah, Oklahoma, was superb in conference play, posting a .333 batting average in 16 Big 12 contests. After coming out to a slow start, O'Donnell finished with 15 runs scored, two home runs, 8 RBIs and 15 walks.
OSU's four All-Big 12 selections marks the team's most since 2010, when five Cowgirls earned spots on the all-conference squad.
Oklahoma State has had at least three players selected to the All-Big 12 team in six of the last eight seasons and 24 of the last 29 seasons, dating back to the Big Eight Conference. Since the Big 12 formed in 1996, 51 different Cowgirls have been named All-Big 12 a combined 67 times.
