Pestrak, Morgan become newest additions to Cowgirl Softball squad
STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State softball team has added Charlotte Morgan and Stacie Pestrak to its coaching staff, it was announced today by head coach Kenny Gajewski.
"I'm extremely excited to have Stacie and Charlotte join the staff," Gajewski said. "Less than a month into her first year at Florida, I knew that Stacie's experience would make her a vital part of that program, and I know that will continue with her joining our staff here at OSU."
"I've talked about making improvements to the pitching staff since day one. Knowing Charlotte's history, we trust that she can come here and make an immediate impact."
Morgan, who spent the last two seasons as Georgia Tech's pitching coach, brings a wealth of experience to the Cowgirls. Over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the Moreno Valley, Calif., native helped the Yellow Jacket staff lower its earned run average by more than a full point, thanks in large part to standout pitcher Kylie Kleinschmidt.
Under Morgan's guidance, Kleinschmidt posted a 2.77 ERA in 2014 while leading the team in complete games (20) and shutouts (three). In 2015, Morgan helped develop freshman Christina Biggerstaff into one of the ACC's most lethal young pitchers. Her 10.1 strikeouts per seven innings was seventh nationally. Also in 2015, Kleinschmidt and Biggerstaff teamed up to toss combined no-hitters on consecutive days.
"First of all, I want to thank Kenny for the opportunity to join the staff and become a part of a great program," Morgan said. "I'm looking forward to the chance to develop these young players and put this team back on the map. The history and tradition in Stillwater reflects a program that I'm honored to be a part of."
In addition to her duties as a pitching coach, Morgan also competes with the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch Softball League. Her overall experience links to many different levels, including nine years as a pitching instructor for clinics and travel ball organizations, coaching and playing on the NCAA Division I level and working with ESPN as a softball analyst.
Following an illustrious playing career at Alabama, Morgan was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 WPSL/NPF draft and played three seasons with the USSSA Florida Pride, leading the team to the 2010 world championship. She led all rookies with a .263 batting average, a .414 slugging percentage and 23 RBI.
Morgan was a three-time NFCA All-America pitcher and four-year letterwinner (2007-2010) for the Crimson Tide. She was named to the All-SEC first team three times (2007-2009) and selected as the league's player of the year in 2009 and 2010. Morgan was a two-time USA Softball player of the year top 10 finalist and won the Senior Lowe's CLASS Award in 2010.
In the circle at Alabama, Morgan pitched in 86 games with 65 starts and compiled a 51-12 overall record with a 2.12 ERA. At the plate, she posted a .387 batting average, 58 home runs and an SEC career-record 264 RBI.
Pestrak joins the Oklahoma State staff after serving as a volunteer assistant coach with Florida for the last two seasons. Along with Gajewski, Pestrak was instrumental in the Gators' recent success, guiding the team to its second-consecutive national championship earlier this month. She also played for the Gators for two years (2005-06), and returned to Gainesville after spending 2013 as an assistant coach at SUNY Buffalo.
"I would like to express my gratitude to Coach Gajewski and the university administration for allowing me the opportunity to become a part of the OSU family," Pestrak said. "I've seen huge amounts of success with Coach Gajewski over the last two seasons, and it is an absolute honor to continue working with him."
As a player, Pestrak helped the Gators to two-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and garnered 2006 SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades. She still ranks fourth in the Gators' record book for single-season sacrifice hits (13 in 2005) Pestrak was 31-of-39 on the base paths, including 14-straight steals in 2005. The utility player was a junior college All-America selection in 2004 at Santa Fe College prior to arriving in Gainesville. She also earned the Florida Community College Athletic Association's Jean Williams Scholar-Athlete Award and was a two-time academic all-state selection.
Following her Gator playing career, Pestrak spent two years in the National Pro Fastpitch League with the Philadelphia Force before beginning her coaching career at Northwestern State University, where she helped the Demons go from a five-win season in 2009 to a 27-win campaign in 2010. One season later, Northwestern State won 32 games. She was responsible for player skill development for defense (infield and outfield), base running and bunting, while assisting in the development of hitting, conditioning and game strategy.
Both hires become official upon the completion of background checks.
