STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma State softball team pumped out six hits against conference foe Texas on Saturday, but fell to the Longhorns, 9-0, at Cowgirl Stadium.
After only managing one hit on Friday, the Cowgirls (21-30, 3-12) saw better success against Texas starter Tiarra Davis, but were unable to solve the Longhorns' powerful offensive attack, which produced nine in the five-inning run-rule contest.
"We did a much better job of hitting the ball today, but we still couldn't come through when we needed to," head coach Rich Wieligman said. "They had two-out hits, and we didn't. It's just another thing we've got to work on as a team."
Overall, Oklahoma State finished 2-8 with runners in scoring position and 0-3 with the bases loaded, allowing Texas to record its second shutout of the series. The Cowgirls doubled their amount of baserunners from Friday's contest, but left ten runners on base in Saturday's decision.
For the second-straight game, the Longhorns jumped on top early, scoring two in the top of the first thanks to three base-hits and one throwing error. Texas would go on to score four more runs in the following two frames, putting OSU starter Jessi Haffner in a 6-0 hole after three innings.
Oklahoma State was able to produce its first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first, beginning with Shelby Davis' lead-off single. Davis moved to second on Shianne Hughes' sacrifice bunt, and then reached third on Tiffany Mikkelson's one-out single. However, Davis was able to retire two of the next three batters to keep the Cowgirls off the board.
OSU loaded the bases in the third, as Hughes reached on error and Vanessa Shippy and Danielle Riddle knocked singles to left. Haffner and Dre McKee had a chance to do some damage, but back-to-back fly outs ended the Cowgirl threat.
In the fourth, Randee O'Donnell sparked an additional rally with a lead-off single to left. Michaela Patton and Davis followed with back-to-back walks, bringing up pinch hitter Darcy Taylor with the bases full and no outs. Taylor' sharp grounder to third was turned into a 5-2-3 double play, cutting down the Cowgirls' chances of pushing across a run.
Texas would go on to score three and keep Oklahoma State scoreless in the fifth, giving the Longhorns a series-clinching 9-0 victory.
The Cowgirls will have a shot to end the three-game set on a high note, as Oklahoma State hosts a 12 p.m. matchup on Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium.
