April 17, 2015 | Cowgirl Equestrian
WACO, Texas - The Oklahoma State equestrian team dropped a tough meet to No. 2 Baylor by way of a raw score tiebreaker in the NCEA Championship quarterfinals at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas, on Friday. After tying the meet at eight points each, Baylor went on to win the tiebreaker, 3081.8-3035.5.
"This season had some ups and some downs, some high points and some low points," Cowgirl equestrian coach Larry Sanchez said. "In the end, coming together at nationals like this team did and making a run at it is something that any coach would be proud of."
The Cowgirls and Bears tied with four points a piece in both the western and the hunt seat events.
In equitation on the flat, the Cowgirls grabbed two points behind Jorden Davis and Maggie Drysch's second wins of the weekend in the event. Drysch took the meet's first point with a 156-136 win over Baylor's Rachel Van Allen. Davis followed it up by scoring an impressive 179 on her ride, topping Alicia Gasser's 170. The Bears followed with two points of their own to send the meet into reining deadlocked at two.
The Cowgirls opened up a lead in reining with a clean sweep. Danielle Cohen started it off, taking her point, 134-132, after a re-ride. Ebba Lange defeated Ginger Chant, 132.5-129, before Justine Peters knocked off Mary Brown, 134.5-129.5 for her second win of the tournament. Senior Katy Krshka completed the sweep when she edged Baylor's Parris Rice, 137-136.5.
Leading, 6-2, heading into equitation over fences, the Cowgirls forced a tie with Amy White and Maggie Drysch scoring for the Pokes. White pushed her record in fences to 5-1 on the season when she downed Baylor's Alicia Gasser, 161-149. Drysch came up big a second time with a 156-136 win over Rachel Van Allen of Baylor.
Baylor made a run in horsemanship, however, taking all four points to tie the meet and force a raw score tiebreaker that ultimately led to a victory for the Bears.
The meet marked the last contest as Cowgirls for nine seniors: Leighona Bernstein, Allison Dooman, Maggie Gampfer, Allison Hurlbut, Allison Joyce, Brooke Klimek Katy Krshka, Mackenzie Malone and Lindsey McMullen."We're really going to miss this group of seniors," Sanchez said. "There are some really outstanding individuals in this class, and as a whole, what they have brought to the program over the last four years is going to be something that's hard to replace. We're going to miss them."
