No. 9 Cowgirls Blank Kansas State, 4-0
April 12, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER -- Oklahoma State's ninth-ranked tennis team served up a 4-0 shutout against the Kansas State Wildcats on senior day on Sunday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Cowgirls improved to 18-4 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 competition, while compiling an 11-1 record at the Greenwood Tenis Center.
"It was a good day, and obviously a win on senior day is good," coach Chris Young said. "I think there's a lot of emotion that goes into it and some players handle that better than others. Some play well and others put a lot of pressure on themselves. For us to get the win and move on, is good for us."
The Cowgirls picked up the doubles point on courts one and three, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
On court three, Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez made a quick appearance, defeating the St. Hill/Panaite pair, 6-1.
The Cowgirls dropped a 6-3 contest on court two, but senior Karyn Guttormsen and sophomore Viktoriya Lushkova teamed up again on court one, where they clinched the doubles point, 6-4.
Between doubles and singles play, Karyn Guttormsen, the lone senior on the squad, was honored in front of her home crowd.
"It's sad that it's already been three years at OSU," Guttormsen said. "It's all coming to an end, but I know that we have a little bit of the season left to finish strong and focus on that. The presentation was really nice. Coach did a great job. It was really cool to have that support today and have all my teammates there."
In singles, OSU came out on fire as each Cowgirl won their first set.
Maria Alvarez was the first to win her singles match, giving up only three games on the day in her 6-2, 6-1 dominating performance over Riley Nizzi on court six.
Carla Tur Mari produced a straight-set victory not long after. The sophomore defeated Maria Panaite on court five, 6-0, 6-2, to give the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead.
Closing out the match was junior Kelsey Laurente, who competed for the Pokes on court three. No. 122 Laurente notched a 6-1, 6-2 win over Iva Bago to finish off the Wildcats.
Play on courts one, two and four was unfinished.
The Cowgirls will wrap up the regular season, traveling to Ames, Iowa to play the Cyclones at 3 p.m. and Morgantown, W.Va., on Sunday to take on the Mountaineers at 10 a.m.
