Cowboys, Cowgirls Finish Successful Trip to Fayetteville
April 11, 2015 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.-- Day two of the John McDonnell Invitational was a successful one for the OSU track and field program. Three Indoor All-Americans made their season debuts, the Cowboys and Cowgirls recorded 13 top-five finishes and the Cowboys won five events.
The men's 4X100-meter relay team dashed to a first-place finish by running the third-fastest time in the Big 12 this season. Sharod Selph, Tyler Jackson, Arlando Brewer-Johnson and John Teeters sprinted the four legs in 40.10, edging Arkansas by eight-hundredths of a second and recording the 10th-best mark in the NCAA West region this season.
"I really liked what I saw from Teeters in his anchor leg today," sprints coach Diego Flaquer said. "He brought us from 15-20 meters back to winning it."
The relay race was Teeters' first taste of outdoor competition this season, but his day wasn't done as he also ran in the third heat of the 200-meter final. His 20.86 gave him the victory by nearly a full second.
"We just wanted to get some training in today," Flaquer said. "I was really pleased with the way he executed the 200. We were just trying to get a regional mark and a Big 12 mark and he did that today. It was good to get him back out there."
Teeters' debut time is fourth in the Big 12, 10th in the West region and 15th in the NCAA.
The sprinters continued to shined for the Pokes as Brewer-Johnson set a personal best in the 100-meter dash final, running a 10.58, winning his heat and finishing third overall. Selph joined Brewer-Johnson in the 100 and also represented well for the OSU program. He ran a 10.60 and finished fourth in the event.
"Arlando had a busy weekend," Flaquer said. "He jumped yesterday and executed a pretty efficient race in the 100. He did what we worked on in practices -- Sharod did the same thing -- and that's all you can ask for as the coach."
OSU was also well represented in the men's 1,500-meter run, as five Cowboys finished in the top-10 and four of them finished in the top five.
The Cowboys swept the top-four and were led by All-American Chad Noelle, who won the 1,500 in 3:43.80. A trio of Cowboys, Matthew Fayers, Justin Vilhauer and Anthoney Armstrong, finished behind Noelle in second, third and fourth, respectively.
"Chad did a great job," coach Dave Smith said. "He did what we were trying to do. He got his qualifying mark and the rest of the guys ran OK, but they didn't go for it like we wanted them to."
Noelle's mark is the best in the Big 12 and fifth in the NCAA this season.
In the women's 4X400-meter relay, the OSU team of Stephanie Ferrante, Kaela Edwards, Danielle Coleman and Ambra Wesley finished fourth, running the sixth fastest race in school history.
Edwards went on to run the open 400-meter run, which was her outdoor season debut and her first time running the event as a Cowgirl. She finished the race in 55.26, good enough for ninth place and sixth all-time in OSU history. Her mark is also seventh in the Big 12 this season.
"It was a busy day for Kaela," coach Smith said. "She ran off-distances today to get ready for the 800 next week. She ran the 400 and the first 1,000 of the 1,500, so today was all in preparation."
The success for the Cowboys continued in the field events, with Itamar Levi in the men's shot put competition. His throw of 17.93m/58-10 earned him his third consecutive win in the event this season. Levi's mark would be the fourth farthest shot put heave in OSU history, but his throw from last year's John McDonnell Invitational is already third.
"He's been great for us all year," Smith said. "He's kind of stuck in that mid-17-meter range and we're just waiting for that breakout when he gets that 18."
Chase Ealey continued her successful junior season, taking third in the women's shot put with a throw of 16.39m/53-9.25.
Next up for the track and field program is a busy weekend at three meets in two states. Some athletes will compete in the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla., and some will head back to the Golden Coast to participate in the Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut, Calif., or the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
