The Best of 2015 Cowboy Baseball: Sweep Extends Record
November 20, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
The 2015 season added to the long and storied history of Oklahoma State baseball, with the list of Cowboy accomplishments under third-year head coach Josh Holliday a long one. We're looking back at some of the most memorable moments and impressive feats turned in by the '15 ballclub, and today we recap a series sweep that continued an impressive streak.
Â
Cowboys Sweep Series With Texas In Stillwater
Series sweeps against Texas are rare, but Oklahoma State pulled off that feat against the Longhorns in 2015.
Â
Texas came to Stillwater on the first weekend in April ranked 18th nationally, but the 11th-ranked Cowboys won an epic series opener at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium before claiming victories in the final two games to complete the sweep.
Â
The three-game sweep marked only the third time OSU had swept a regular-season series against Texas and first since 2008 in Austin. The Cowboys also won all three games of the UT series in Stillwater in 1999.
Â
With the three wins, OSU also extended a program-record streak of Big 12 Conference series victories to 10 dating back to the 2014 season.
Â
"It was very important for sure," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "It was a grueling series in terms of competing against a team like Texas who is very good. You have that 18-inning game (Friday's opener) so your kids basically square off for 36 innings — that's a lot. It's mentally draining as much as anything.
Â
"Sweeping Texas is not an easy thing to do. I'm very proud of our team… It was just a gritty effort by our kids. It wasn't necessarily perfect, but the competitive spirit was strong."
Â
Friday's series opener actually ended early Saturday morning after a 6-hour, 51-minute contest that finally concluded in the bottom of the 18th inning when Corey Hassel blasted a three-run, walk-off home run to give OSU a 6-3 win.
Â
OSU clinched the series on Saturday, with a two-run homer by Bryan Case in the fourth inning the difference in a 3-1 win. Tyler Buffett picked up the win in relief on the mound, and Trey Cobb earned his first-career save.
Â
In Sunday's finale, Dustin Williams racked up five RBIs as OSU came from behind for the third-straight time to defeat the Longhorns. Michael Freeman improved to 6-0 on the mound as he struck out seven in eight innings of work to secure the sweep.
