Cowgirl Tennis Continues Weekend Competitions

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's tennis team opened play in the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic in Florida and continued action at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York on Friday.
In Florida, the Cowgirls opened the tournament with a Carla Tur Mari and Vladica Babic doubles victory, 8-1, against Sivan Krems and Alanna Wolff of Princeton.
The duo faced Ashley Bongart and Sadie Hammond of Tennessee in the quarterfinals, winning, 8-4. The win secured the Cowgirls a spot in the semifinals on Saturday.
The matches marked the first time Tur Mari and Babic have teamed up in doubles during fall competition.
In singles play, Tur Mari defeated Lyn Yee Choo of Eastern Tennessee State in a tough three set match, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(2).
Tur Mari advanced to the round of 16, where she would face Eve Repic of Tennessee.
The junior Cowgirl took the match in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-3. Tur Mari will face Nicole Dzenga of South Florida in the quarterfinals.
Tur Mari was undefeated in her four matches on Friday.
"Carla had to battle for both singles," coach Chris Young said. "It was an impressive performance."
As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Babic received a first round bye, before facing Juliana Cardosa of Southern Florida.
Babic also won her matchup by a score of, 7-5, 6-3. She will face Julia Ascua of Florida Gulf Coast in the quarterfinals.
Babic is the highest remaining seed in the quarterfinals.
Three Cowgirls participated in day two of the USTA/ITA National Indoors.
"I am proud of these three girls for having another great day," Young said.
Katarina Adamovic advanced to the second round, after defeating the No. 1 seed Danielle Collins of Virginia on Thursday.
No. 92 Adamovic fell in the second round of the main draw to Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State, 6-3, 6-4.
"Katarina competed very well and although the outcome wasn't what we hoped for, she has made great strides this fall," Young said.
In the doubles consolation draw, Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente took on Big 12 foes Lynn Kiro and Alexandra Valenstein of Texas Tech.
"Maria and Kelsey are becoming a great doubles team and they keep finding ways to win matches and today was no different," Young said. "They stepped up and played their best tennis at the end with everything on the line."
The senior duo knocked off the Red Raiders in a tough three-set match, 6-4, 3-6, 14-12.
The Cowgirls continue action in both tournaments on Saturday.
