October 07, 2015 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team continued its winnings ways on Wednesday, defeating Butler Community College, 7-0, in a ten-inning scrimmage at Cowgirl Stadium.
Box Score
Despite having its lowest offensive output of the fall, Oklahoma State's pitching staff was again impressive, allowing only three hits in the ten-inning shutout.
"I'm very happy with all aspects of the performance tonight, but the efficiency of our pitching staff was impressive," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "The fact that they only threw 91 pitches was incredible. Give credit to Butler as well, as they are a quality program that has been playing all of their opponents extremely well this fall."
The Cowgirls' (4-0) outstanding effort in the circle began with Brandi Needham, who had failed to give up an earned run going into Wednesday's scrimmage. With four innings of scoreless work, the junior has now accumulated a perfect ERA in 15 innings in the circle. In addition to tossing a three-pitch inning in the fourth, Needham added three strikeouts to her dominating performance.
Also adding to the pitching attack was Kacy Freeze, who came on in relief and tossed 4.2 shutout innings against the Grizzlies. After Freeze, it was Whitney Whitehorn who closed out the shutout, shutting down the last four Butler batters in her first appearance of the fall.
Offensively, the Cowgirls were led by Vanessa Shippy (2-for-2, 3B, 2 R), Red Reasnor (2-for-5) and Maddi Holcomb (2-for-4, R). The Oklahoma State lineup tallied runs in seven different innings, including scores in each of the first five frames.
Oklahoma State will return to action on Sunday, as the Cowgirls take on Arkansas in their only road trip of the fall. The doubleheader is set to being at 1 p.m. in Fayetteville, Ark.
