ERIN, Wis. — Oklahoma State's men's golf team opened play at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate on Sunday with a 282 team total to stand in second place after the first day of action at Erin Hills Golf Course.
The Cowboys' 6-under tally put them two strokes off the pace of SMU at the par-72, 7,236-yard layout. UCLA finished the round in possession of third place at 1-over 289.
SMU's Andrew Buchanan fired a 5-under 67 to grab the individual lead, while a pair of Cowboys posted 69s to finish among the group tied for third place.
Sophomore Kristoffer Ventura and senior Jordan Niebrugge each put together 3-under scores.
Ventura got started quickly with birdies at the second and third before his lone bogey of the front nine came at the fourth. After another birdie at the eighth, Ventura moved back to 1-under with a bogey at the 13th. However, he bounced back with birdies on Nos. 14 and 15 before closing with three consecutive pars.
Like his teammate, Niebrugge started fast with birdies on his opening two holes. His lone bogey on the front side came at the fourth as he turned at 1-under 35. Niebrugge's bogey-free inward nine featured birdies at the 10th and 18th.
Sophomore Brendon Jelley and junior Wyndham Clark each posted even-par 72s to come in tied for 17th place.
Sophomore Sam Stevens posted a 76 to finish tied for 35th.
Sophomore Stratton Nolen, who is competing in the event as an individual, carded a 1-under 71 to finish tied for 10th.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:20 a.m. and will be grouped with SMU and UCLA. Live scoring for the event is available at golfstat.com.
