Fall Softball: Inside the Numbers
October 22, 2015 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team put on an impressive showing this fall, as evidenced by a perfect 8-0 record and a handful of double-digit victories. The following notes and points outline the numbers behind the Cowgirls' success in fall competition:
Team Notes
- In eight fall scrimmages, the Cowgirls outscored their opponents, 110-4. Oklahoma State didn't allow more than one run to any opponent, and posted four shutouts. Overall, OSU averaged 13.75 runs per game and scored 15 runs or more in five games.
- As a team, Oklahoma State hit a blazing .364 at the plate. That mark was boosted by nine different Cowgirls hitting above .300, including two who eclipsed the .500 mark.
- Plate discipline proved to be crucial factor for the Cowgirls this fall, as they drew 65 walks and struck out only 29 times. Vanessa Shippy and Darcy Taylor each drew double-digit walks.
- The Cowgirl offense may have put up its own share of eye-popping numbers, but the Oklahoma State pitching staff was equally as impressive. A team ERA of 0.39 was backed by only allowing four earned runs in eight fall scrimmages.
- Not one of Oklahoma State's four pitchers used this fall had an ERA higher than 0.66. Whitney Whitehorn (8.1 innings pitched) and Peyton Walker (5.0 innings pitched) both didn't allow a run all season, while Brandi Needham (0.26 ERA, 27.0 innings pitched) and Kacy Freeze (0.66 ERA, 31.2 innings pitched) consistently shut down opposing batters in a bulk of the workload.
- Oklahoma State only surrendered one extra base-hit in the fall, with that being a home run. Also, the Cowgirls' K/BB ratio was a blistering 6-to-1, as OSU pitchers struck out 60 and only allowed 10 walks on the season.
- Speed was also a key component of the Cowgirls' offensive surge. As a team, Oklahoma State was successful on 33 of 38 stolen base attempts, with three Cowgirls posting six stolen bases or more.
Individual Notes
- Sophomore Vanessa Shippy led all Cowgirl hitters with a .565 mark at the dish, complete with two doubles, two triples and six RBIs. With 11 walks in the mix, Shippy reached base in more than 70 percent of her at-bats.
- One of the most outstanding individual performances of the fall came via Tiffany Mikkelson, who had a career day in the Cowgirls' 16-1 win over Arkansas. Against the Razorbacks, Mikkelson produced 11 RBIs in a 5-for-5 effort that included three homes runs, two of which were grand slams. Mikkelson led the Cowgirls in several offensive categories, including runs (18), home runs (5), RBI (21) and slugging percentage (1.065).
- Half of the Cowgirls' home runs came off the bats of Red Reasnor and Darcy Taylor, who each blasted three a piece this fall.
- 30 of the team's 60 strikeouts were credited to Kacy Freeze, who averaged nearly one strikeout per inning in 31.2 frames of work. In addition to throwing the team's only complete-game shutout, Freeze posted a team-low opposing batting average (.117).
- Oklahoma State's group of new additions played an important role in the team's success. Red Reasnor led all newcomers with a .500 mark at the plate, in addition to tallying three home runs and 13 RBIs. Taylor Lynch followed close behind with a batting average of .344, a mark aided by seven extra base-hits, including four doubles and three triples. In the circle, transfer Kacy Freeze saw the most action of any Cowgirl pitcher (31.2 innings pitched).
- Freshman Madi Sue Montgomery was flawless in the field, making plays at shortstop, third base and center field. Rounding out the Cowgirls' contributing newcomers was Asea Webber, who hit .333 in two contests before being sidelined with an injury.
