October 18, 2015 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team wrapped up a perfect fall scrimmage slate with a victory over Newman University on Sunday, defeating the Lady Jets, 15-0, at Cowgirl Stadium.
Box Score
The Cowgirls posted eight victories in eight fall scrimmages, outscoring their opponents, 110-4, over the course of the season. OSU registered four shutouts in fall ball, and didn't allow more than one run to any opponent.
"Today's win was a great way to end our fall season," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Again, we played well in all aspects of the game, with our offense, pitching and defense each giving strong performances."
Newman came out swinging in the top of the first, using a pair of a base-hits and walk to load the bases with one out. The Cowgirls answered with a 3-2-4 double play, marking the beginning of a sensational day for the OSU defense.
The Lady Jets' two first-inning hits turned out to be the only ones of the day, as the Cowgirl pitching staff responded by tossing nine-consecutive hitless frames. Whitney Whitehorn started things off with three scoreless innings, marked by a pair of strikeouts. Brandi Needham followed with four shutout innings of her own, and Kacy Freeze sealed the win by retiring the final nine Newman hitters.
The Oklahoma State offense was relentless from the start, as senior Tiffany Mikkelson launched a two-run homer in the top of the first to highlight a three-run inning. The blast was Mikkelson's fifth of the season, a mark that led all Cowgirls in fall competition.
After notching pairs of runs in the second and fourth, the OSU lineup delivered eight runs over the eighth and ninth innings, helping the team mark its fifth win of the fall with 15 or more runs.
Sophomore Vanessa Shippy was a vital piece of the Cowgirls' 15-run effort, scoring four and posting four base-hits in Sunday's contest. Shippy also registered three RBIs on a three-run triple in the ninth, and finished a home run short of the cycle.
Also contributing offensively were Red Reasnor (3-for-5, 4 RBI), Taylor Lynch (2-for-4, 3 R, RBI), Maddi Holcomb (3-for-4, R) and Madi Sue Montgomery (1-for-4, 2 RBI). In total, Oklahoma State lined 17 base-hits in the ten-inning scrimmage, and drew nine walks against the Newman pitching arsenal.
The Cowgirls will kick off the 2016 regular season in February, beginning with a trip to San Marcos, Texas, for a tournament at Texas State. For more updates and information, follow @CowgirlSB on Twitter.
