FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Chad Noelle reeled off an astonishing effort in the anchor leg to win the distance medley relay for the Oklahoma State men's track and field team on Friday, highlighting the team's first day of competition at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
With the Cowboys sitting in fourth place through three legs, Noelle delivered a late charge to help complete a thrilling comeback and win the event with a final mark of 9:30.65. Noelle's run of 3:56.82 in the 1,600 meter final leg helped the Cowboys overcome a two-second differential after the third leg, as the Cowboys overtook Stanford, Texas A&M and Iowa State en route to the late victory.
“We were a little unsure going into the race with it being Fabian Clarkson and Matthew Fayers' first race of the season, but those two guys really delivered,” assistant coach Bobby Lockhart said. “With Chad Noelle, we knew he was fit, but seeing him run a 3:56 this early makes us really excited with where we are. They had a great opener, and we're even more excited to see where we can be at nationals.”
As a group, Noelle, Fabian Clarkson, Brandon Singleton and Matthew Fayers registered the third-fastest time in NCAA competition this season, the third-fastest mark in school history and the No. 1 time in the Big 12.
In addition to the Cowboys' thrilling finish in the DMR, Oklahoma State also provided excitement in the sprints category, as school-record holder John Teeters returned to the track for his first appearance since recording the NCAA's No. 1 time in the 60 meter dash earlier this season. This time around, Teeters dominated the event with a mark of 6.55, finishing only a hundredth of a second behind the 6.54 he recorded at the Holiday Inn Invitational.
Also in the 60 meter dash, Arlando Brewer-Johnson and Tyler Jackson finished in 12th (6.94) and 16th (7.01), respectively, sending the two Cowboy freshmen into tomorrow's semifinal round.
On the women's side, the Cowgirls also provided a solid performance in the distance medley relay, as Aurora Dybedokken, Stephanie Ferrante, Clara Nichols and Kaela Edwards finished in second with a time of 11:12.89. The mark stands at No. 5 in collegiate competition, No. 1 in the Big 12, and No. 3 in the OSU record books.
“I thought the DMR group did really well, especially with it being this early in the season,” head coach Dave Smith said. “Our two freshman ran well, and Kaela Edwards had a great anchor. It was a great run for the opener, and I think we'll get another crack at it later on in the season and run fast enough to guarantee a spot at nationals.”
In the women's long jump, Brittney Reid registered a new personal best with a leap of 5.45m/17-10.75, capping off an exciting night for the No. 13 Cowgirls and No. 16 Cowboys.
Both OSU squads return to action tomorrow, with day two of the Razorback Invitational set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
