September 27, 2014 | Cowgirl Equestrian
The Oklahoma State equestrian team notched its first win of the 2014-15 season on Saturday, knocking off South Dakota State, 16-4, in the team's season opener at Animal Science Arena in Stillwater.
“I'm very proud of how our team rode today,” Cowgirl equestrian coach Larry Sanchez said. “There were some questions going in because we had so many young riders competing for us for the first time, but I'm very proud of how they stepped up and proved to us how talented they really are.”
With the win, the Cowgirls are 1-0 to start the season for the first time since 2011.
In equitation over fences, junior Amy White earned her second-career Most Outstanding Performer honor with an 86-78 win over SDSU's Jordan Goodall. Freshman Carly Barrick tallied the second-highest score for the Cowgirls in the discipline, taking down Taylor Duerr, 84-76. Wins by senior Allie Joyce and sophomore Jorden Davis helped push the Cowgirls to a 4-1 win in the equitation over fences event.
The equitation on the flat team scored three points behind good performances from White, Davis and freshman Kendall Pedigo. Pedigo was strong in her first meet as a Cowgirl, picking up MOP honors in an 86-72 victory over SDSU's Melissa Kerr. White knocked off Emily Kerr, 84-76, while Davis notched an 82-70 triumph over Blair Julia Wright. The Cowgirls took the equitation on the flat event, 3-2.
The Cowgirls kept the momentum rolling in the western events, taking horsemanship and reining by a combined total of 9-1.
Senior Katy Krshka earned MOP honors in horsemanship with a 76-68.5 win over SDSU's Kelsey Swainston. Junior Paris Nottingham, sophomore Miranda Reed and senior Lindsey McMullen also notched victories in the event. Nottingham edged Sarah Bowen, 73-70.5, before McMullen snagged a 75-72 win over Danielle Dickerson. Reed defeated Elizabeth Niewojna, 75-72 in her first-career appearance as a Cowgirl.
The Cowgirls finished strong in reining, sweeping the event by taking all five points from the Jackrabbits. Krshka once again took MOP honors after defeating Christina Dexter of SDSU, 73-69.5. Three freshmen picked up wins in reining in their first appearance as Cowgirls. Julia Purus posted a 71-70.5 win over Danielle Baker, while Swedish freshman Ebba Lange took a 73-71.5 victory. Freshman Danielle Cohen earned the win after scoring a 70 against her opponent Miranda Sullivan Sophomore Brenna Brawner picked up her first-career win as well, downing Raivenne Scott of SDSU, 70-64.5
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they open up Big 12 play in Waco, Texas, against the sixth-ranked Baylor Bears.
“Any time we go up against a Big 12 school, it's always a tough competition,” Sanchez said. “I'm glad that we got one under our belt to help us mentally prepare for Baylor on the road. We saw some things today that we need to correct before the Baylor meet, and we're going to work hard on doing just that.”
