Cowgirl Equestrian Edged By No. 4 Baylor
October 18, 2014 | Cowgirl Equestrian
The Oklahoma State equestrian team fell, 9-7, in their conference opener to fourth-ranked Baylor in Waco, Texas, on Saturday. Despite suffering a tough loss, the squad delivered a number of impressive performances, taking three of the meet's four Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors.
“It was a very close meet and we took it down to the wire against a good Baylor team,” Cowgirl equestrian coach Larry Sanchez said. “I thought that we rode well, considering this was the first time for many of our girls to go on the road and compete on unfamiliar horses. We had some great rides today, and are very proud of the effort, but we also have some things to work on for the TCU meet coming up.”
The Cowgirls (1-1, 0-1 Big 12) and Bears split the equitation over fences event, 2-2-1. Freshman Carly Barrick picked up the first MOP honor of her career after knocking off Baylor's Brittney Mirkov, 81-72. Senior Allison Joyce carved out the largest winning margin of the day, outperforming Baylor's Paige Parker, 80-30. Jorden Davis tied Baylor's Sam Schaefer with a score of 82.
The Bears recorded a 3-1-1 triumph in equitation on the flat. Freshman Katie Jones was the lone Cowgirl to notch a point in the event, defeating Baylor's Schaefer, 75-65. Jorden Davis and Paige Parker tied with marks of 76.
Junior Paris Nottingham led the Cowgirls to a 3-1-1 victory in horsemanship. Nottingham garnered MOP honors after posting a tight 69-68 win over Baylor's Mary Brown. Lindsey McMullen and Ty Paris each found themselves on the high side of the score sheet as well. McMullen received a 73.5 mark in her ride against Baylor's Gillian Chant. Paris picked up her first win of the season in a 72-65.5 triumph over Charlotte Green. Sophomore Miranda Reed tied with Parris Rice.
The meet was decided with reining, where the Bears outgunned the Cowgirls, 3-1-1. Katy Krshka attained MOP honors for the second-consecutive meet after downing Ginger Chant of Baylor, 69-63.5. Cowgirl freshman Ebba Lange and Baylor's Parris Rice tied with scores of 69.5 each.
The Bears clinched the meet after Mary Brown of Baylor was granted a re-ride due to an equipment malfunction. Brown scored high enough on her second opportunity to outscore freshman Danielle Cohen's second ride and clinch the win for the Bears.
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 1, when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on seventh-ranked TCU.
