GLASGOW, Scotland – Oklahoma State track and field star Nick Miller added another impressive line to his resume Tuesday, finishing as runner-up in the hammer throw at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Miller, who will be a senior at Oklahoma State, bested elite athletes from around the world to earn the silver medal with his throw of 72.99 meters and finished only behind veteran Canadian Jim Steacy's throw of 74.16 meters.
Earlier at the event, Miller took first in one of two qualifying rounds to secure his spot in the finals. His throw of 72.76 meters was the best overall mark from both qualifying rounds.
A three-time All-American in the hammer throw and two-time All-American in the indoor weight throw, Miller has had an outstanding summer of competition that includes a hammer throw title at the Sainsbury's British Championships, winning the senior-level national event with a mark of 73.96 meters.
The Carlisle, United Kingdom native finished as runner-up at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2014, throwing 72.40 meters and holding the lead for the majority of the meet. He eclipsed the 70-meter mark in six meets last season.
Miller isn't the only athlete with OSU ties at the Commonwealth Games, as former Cowboy runner Tom Farrell turned in a seventh-place finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:23.96.
Farrell, also a Carlisle, United Kingdom native, was a seven-time All-American during his time at Oklahoma State. He was a key member of the Cowboys' 2010 and 2012 NCAA-champion cross country teams and set the Oklahoma State school record in the 5,000 meters with a time 13:15.31.
