BIRMINGHAM, England – Former Oklahoma State cross country and track standout Tom Farrell won the 5,000 meters title at the Sainsbury's British Championships Saturday, finishing the senior-level national event with a time of 13:51.43.
Farrell, a seven-time All-American during his time at Oklahoma State, held off second-place finisher Ross Millington by about half a second to seal his title.
“We're proud and very excited for Tom,” Oklahoma State track and field coach Dave Smith said. “He's a great ambassador for our program. For him to win the British national championships is a big deal and we expect him to go on and have a shot to win the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.”
The Carlisle, United Kingdom native was a key member of the Cowboys' 2010 and 2012 NCAA-champion cross country teams. He also set the Oklahoma State school record in the 5,000 meters with a time 13:15.31.
Farrell's first-place finish wraps up a big weekend for Oklahoma State, with Nick Miller also winning the hammer throw title at the British Championships Saturday and Ryan Vail, Girma Mecheso and Chad Noelle all representing the program in impressive fashion at the 2014 USA Track and Field Championships.
