FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -
Oklahoma State's Nick Miller and John Teeters won their respective events at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Round, in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday.
Miller, the No. 1 hammer thrower in the NCAA, registered a launch of 71.36m/234-1, which won the event by nine feet. With the victory, Miller earned his third-straight berth in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and second-straight West region title.
“Nick is extremely consistent,” OSU coach Dave Smith said. “I think he is better than he was last year. He does not have many bad days or throws. I really think he can build on last year's experience in Eugene. He now knows what it's like to be the favorite and compete with that pressure. He is extremely confident, and I don't expect anything other than his best at the national championships.”
In the men's 100 meters, Teeters backed up his top qualifying time by winning the event, running a personal-best 10.11. That mark moves him into the No. 3 spot on OSU's all-time list. Teeters will compete at the NCAA Championships for the first time.
“[John] Teeters has been so consistent,” Smith said. It's to the point where we can expect a 10.1 when he runs, and that's amazing. If he keeps this up, he will be a first team All-American and could place really high in Eugene. I'm so proud of what he and Diego [Flaquer] have been able to do. They are a great team, and I think the best is yet to come.”
In the men's 800 meters, Tyler Payton ran a 1:50.46, taking 19th. He missed NCAA qualification by just over a second.
“I'm really proud of Tyler,” Smith said. “He was really competitive, was in good position and did everything he could to qualify. I'm proud of the way he competed. He has come a long way, and it's too bad he is running out of time. He is really coming into his own as an athlete and has had an amazing year. Bobby Lockhart has done an incredible job with him since he stepped on campus. I'm really happy with the job they did.”
Anthoney Armstrong was accidentally clipped from behind and fell on the first water jump of the 3,000 meter steeplechase, but recovered and ran a near season-best time of 9:01.87, taking 23rd.
“Getting clipped and falling in the water took a lot out of Anthoney,” Smith said. “However, he still almost ran a season-best time. I think this was his best race of the year, because of the adversity he fought going through something like that. He handled it very well, got back into the race and did a fantastic job. He took a step today that he had not taken before. Bobby [Lockhart] has doe a great job as well. It was a good day for Bobby and his guys.”
On the women's side, in the triple jump, Viktoriia Sadokhina barely missed out on the chance to compete in Eugene, placing 17th, with a jump of 12.51m/41-0.5.
OSU track & field will resume competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Round tomorrow, with events starting at 10 a.m.
