ATHENS, Ga. - Oklahoma State women's tennis freshman Viktoriya Lushkova earned her first career All-America honor after upsetting 14th-ranked Olivia Janowicz of Florida, 7-5, 7-5, at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., to advance to the tournament's round of 16.
After taking the match's first set, 7-5, Lushkova fell down early in the second when Janowicz picked up a break in the second game of the set. When Janowicz jumped up, 5-2, Lushkova turned it on, winning five-straight games to defeat Janowicz in straight-sets.
With the win, Lushkova joins Lori McNeal, Renata Beranski and Tessa Price on the list of Cowgirls to earn All-America honors in singles. Beranski and Price were the last Cowgirls to pick up the honor nearly 30 years ago in 1987.
The win marks Lushkova's 19th victory of the season and her first career triumph over a top-15 opponent. Lushkova also became the seventh Cowgirl in the Big 12 era to notch at least 19 dual singles wins in a season.
Lushkova will face 27th-ranked Ester Goldfeld of Duke in the tournament's round of 16 on Friday.
