STILLWATER - Oklahoma State's softball team rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but was unable to overcome a 5-0 deficit as the Cowgirls fell to Bedlam-rival and No. 13 Oklahoma 5-4 here Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Cowgirl Softball Complex.
Senior pitcher Simone Freeman (21-16) started in the circle for the Cowgirls in the final home game of her career and worked out of an early jam in the top of the first. OSU was not as fortunate in the second as the Sooners scored five runs on four hits and an error, taking a 5-0 lead. OU had two more runners on base in the third before Freeman settled down and retired eight-straight batters.
Oklahoma State's rally in the fifth started when Gessenia DeLaCruz led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Senior Shannon Kaufman and Shelby Davis followed with a pair of infield singles, loading the bases. A double by senior Ari Morrison over the head of the Sooner leftfielder scored two, and a wild pitch by OU hurler Kelsey Stevens scored the speedy Davis from third. A double down the left-field line just inside the third-base bag by Tiffany Mikkelson scored Morrison, trimming the Oklahoma lead to 5-4.
The Cowgirls got a runner on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Freeman flew out on a deep fly ball to left, ending the game.
Oklahoma State (26-27, 5-12 Big 12) and Oklahoma (44-10, 15-2) will wrap up the regular season on Sunday as the Cowgirls travel to Norman, Okla., for a 2 p.m. contest. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest Plus.
