LUBBOCK, Texas – A trio of Oklahoma State Cowboys has been named to national award watch lists by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, it was announced today.
Seniors Brendan McCurry and Vince Wheeland are two of 47 players on the College Baseball Hall of Fame 2014 Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List, while sophomore Donnie Walton is one of 35 players on the 2014 Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award Watch List.
McCurry has dominated the opposition in his 23 appearances this season. The OSU closer is 5-0 with a 0.29 ERA and ranks fifth in the NCAA with 11 saves. He has allowed just one run in 30.2 innings and has given up only 20 hits while recording 34 strikeouts.
Posting big numbers has led to McCurry moving to the top of the OSU saves record books. Last week, the right-hander surpassed Jordy Mercer as the Cowboys' career saves leader, and his 11 saves this season are an OSU single-season record, besting the 10 of his older brother, Randy (2009), as well as Marques Davis (1997) and Dennis Livingston (1982).
Wheeland, who is fourth on OSU's all-time appearances list with 73, is on the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List for the second-straight year.
A right-hander, Wheeland has made 19 appearances this season and is 4-0 with a 1.11 ERA that ranks second in the Big 12 Conference. He is also among the top 10 in the league in opponent batting average (.193, T-2nd) and appearances (T-6th).
Walton has started all 41 games for the Cowboys at shortstop and is the team's third-leading hitter with a .301 batting average, while he leads the club with eight sacrifice hits. He also ranks in the top 10 in the Big 12 this season with 12 doubles and 28 walks.
The Pitcher of the Year and Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year awards will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual Night of Champions on June 28 in Lubbock, Texas. For more information on the awards, visit www.collegebaseballhall.org.
