STILLWATER -
The Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams have entered the nation's top 25, at No. 22 and No. 21, respectively, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) outdoor rankings, which were released today.
This is the first time in the history of the outdoor rankings in which the OSU women have been ranked. The No. 21 Cowgirls had been knocking on the door in the past two weeks, rising as high as No. 29 two weeks ago.
On the men's side, this is the first time the No. 22 Cowboys have been ranked since the final week of 2013, when they held the No. 17 spot, which is their highest outdoor ranking to date.
Individually, Oklahoma State has 14 athletes ranked in the NCAA's top 50 in their respective events.
On the men's side, Chad Noelle, John Teeters, Shadrack Kipchirchir and Nick Miller all claim top-five NCAA rankings; Noelle (3:40.06) is No. 2 in the 1,500 meters, Teeters (10.14) ranks third in the 100 meters, Miller (71.30m/233-11) holds the No. 4 spot in the hammer throw and Kipchirchir (13:37.68) is No. 5 in the 5,000 meters.
OSU has two men ranked in the 10,000 meters. Kirubel Erassa (29:02.77) is No. 21, and Brian Gohlke (29:17.41) checks in at No. 37. Itamar Levi holds the No. 41 spot in the shot put, with a mark of 18.05m/59-2.75
For the Cowgirls, Savannah Camacho leads the way at No. 3 in the 800 meters. Her mark of 2:02.84 ranks second in OSU history. Clara Nichols (2:06.83) joins Camacho in the 800 meter rankings at No. 34.
In the discus, Ieva Zarankaite (54.34m/178-3) continues her impressive debut season, checking in at No. 14, Monika Juodeskaite (16:00.32) ranks No. 21 in the 5,000 meters and Viktoriia Sadokhina (12.78m/41-11.25) holds the No. 22 spot in the triple jump. OSU also has two more throwers ranked— Chase Ealey (15.55m/51-0.25) is No. 45 in the shot put, and Caitlin Way (58.15m/190-9) occupies the No. 46 spot in the hammer throw.
“Our men and women been working extremely hard and putting up great marks,” OSU coach Dave Smith said. “It's always great exposure for the program to be ranked in the top 25, especially on the women's side for the first time in outdoors. It shows our work is being recognized, but a top-25 ranking was not a goal of ours coming into the season. We have to remain focused on our goals and continue to move toward them.”
OSU track & field returns to action this weekend, April 24-26, at the Drake Relays, in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Penn Relays, in Philadelphia, Pa.
