IRVING, Texas - Oklahoma State women's tennis player Viktoriya Lushkova has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week for matches played from March 18-24, the league office announced Tuesday. It is the Cowgirl freshman's first time receiving the award.
Lushkova notched big wins over No. 53 Stefanie Tan of TCU and Kenna Kilgo of Texas Tech in singles play last weekend to pick up her 10th and 11th-straight victories.
In the Cowgirls' match with TCU, the Ukrainian freshman was the first of three-straight Cowgirls to get on the board with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tan. The win was Lushkova's third over a ranked opponent this season.
On Sunday afternoon, the Cowgirls were trailing No. 33 Texas Tech, 2-1, when Lushkova bounced back from dropping her first set to take the second from Kilgo and force a third set. Lushkova took the third set, 6-3, to win the match on one and tie the overall match score at two. Lushkova's win over Kilgo proved to be a pivotal point for the Cowgirls as it opened the door for teammates on courts three and six to take their matches, clinching the Cowgirls' fourth-straight win and second Big 12 victory of the season.
In doubles, Lushkova teamed up with Kanyapat Narattana to split the weekend's matches. Lushkova and Narattana were the first Cowgirl doubles team to notch a win against the Horned Frogs, defeating Tan and Arantekin, 8-4, on one. Lushkova and Narattana have been an important factor in doubles for the Cowgirls this season, as the win was the tandem's eighth-straight victory.
Lushkova and the Cowgirls will travel to Lawrence, Kan., on Friday, March 28, to take on Kansas at 3:30 p.m. Fans will be able to watch the match online at ESPN3.com.
