STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State softball players Tarah Ettinger and Simone Freeman swept the Big 12 weekly honors by being named Big 12 Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference announced today.
Ettinger batted .611 in five starts for the Cowgirls this weekend at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio, Texas. In 18 at-bats, she recorded 11 hits and a double. She racked up eight runs batted in, an .833 slugging percentage and scored six runs. She also crushed a grand slam against Rutgers on Saturday. Ettinger also recorded the game-ending single and RBI for OSU against UTSA Sunday to cement Freeman's five inning no-hitter in the 8-0 victory. The Cowgirls went 5-0 on the weekend to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Freeman went 3-0 in three starts with one complete game. In her four appearances, she recorded one complete-game shutout and picked up a save. She had a 1.09 earned run average in 19.1 innings. She gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out 35. At the plate, Freeman had three hits with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. She also pitched a five inning run-rule no-hitter against UTSA. It was her first career no-hitter.
This is the third time since the Big 12 formed in 1996 that OSU has swept the weekly honors. This is the second time Ettinger has been named Big 12 Player of the week, the last time on May 7, 2013. It is first time since 2012 that one has earned the pitcher of the week honor.
The Cowgirls return to action this weekend when they participate in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
