December 04, 2014 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. - "How I Got Here" is a series that asks Oklahoma State athletes to detail their athletic background and careers and how they got to where they are now. Today's edition features women's tennis player Maria Alvarez, a junior from Zaragoza, Spain.
When did you start playing tennis?
"I started playing tennis when I was around 7 years old. I was at a summer camp and my parents wanted me to go and play. They just wanted me to play a sport so I chose tennis. Then my instructor said, 'hey, you have some good skills.' That's how it all started."
Who is your favorite tennis athlete?
"When I was really young, I liked to watch Justine Henin. I like her energy, her attitude on the court and her one-handed backhand. I also like David Ferrer."
Why OSU?
"Coach Young talked to me a lot and showed me that it was a good school and that the program was really developing. That's why I chose it."
How have you improved since coming to Oklahoma State?
"As far as tennis goes, the coaches and teammates have helped me a lot the last three years to grow as a player. I also think I have grown off the court, too."
What are your goals?
"I want to have a good spring and win the Big 12 team title. I just want our team as a whole to do well this year, and I think we will."
