How I Got Here: Karyn Guttormsen
December 29, 2014 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. - "How I Got Here" is a series that asks Oklahoma State athletes to detail their athletic background and careers and how they got to where they are now. Today's edition features women's tennis player Karyn Guttormsen, a senior from Kenosha, Wis.
When did you start playing tennis?
“I started playing tennis around 4 years old. It started as just something my dad and I would do. Just having fun hitting around.”
Who was your tennis idol growing up?
“I never really had an idol I looked up to. When I was growing up, I always just wanted to play instead of watching the pros play.”
How did you end up at OSU?
“I ended up at OSU actually very luckily. I was a transfer, and I decided to transfer half-way through the year, which didn't give me much time to find a new school. But Chris Young found out I was available and called me up, and I took the offer right then. It happened very suddenly and kind of out of the blue, but I am very grateful it did.”
How have you improved since you came to OSU?
“I think I have improved in a lot of ways since coming to OSU. I grew as a person on and off court and it's been a very positive impact. Off court, I have matured a lot, especially in the school aspect. On court I think both coaches have helped me grow a lot as well. They have showed me how to work harder for what I want and also how to be a team member and leader out there.”
What are your goals for this year?
“This year our main goal is to bring back a Big 12 Championship title. That's what we have been working hard and training for all year, and this year I think we have it. After we take home Big 12 then it's all about making it to the Sweet 16 or farther in the NCAA tournament. But we have to take it all one step at a time.”
What are your plans after college?
“After college, I want to move on and play professionally. I will head out on the tour full-time in May when I graduate and finish this season. I'll give it a few years to see how it goes.”
