A Look Back – 2013 K-State Winter Invitational
The Oklahoma State track and field program opened its 2013-14 indoor season on Saturday, Dec. 15, as the Cowboys and Cowgirls competed at the Kansas State Winter Invitational.
The men's squad picked up three first-place finishes on the day, including Tyler Payton's 1:13.65 finish in the 600-yard run, Luis Martinez's 4:20.47 in the mile and Charles Mathenge's 8:42.53 in the 3,000 meters. The Cowboys finished the mile 1-2-3, with Alexander Johannson (4:20.76) and Brigham Hedges (4:21.79) following Martinez.
Oklahoma State also finished as a group in the men's 3,000 meters, with Noah Gade finishing second at 8:43.65 and Tommy Casey at fourth in 8:51.02. The OSU men finished the day with eight top-five finished as Ryan Finnie placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.56 meters.
The Oklahoma State women's squad had 10 top-five finishes, highlighted by Brittney Reid's fourth-place 7.91 in the 60-meter dash, a time that ranks sixth on OSU's all-time best list. Reid also reach a personal-best in the long jump as she leapt 5.37 meters for a sixth-place finish. Jordan Highsmith finished two places better in that event with a 5.50-meter mark.
Jasmine Adams' 8.11 time in the 60 meters was a new personal best and enough for eighth place, while Kristina Fischer's 3:07.82 was a personal-best for her in the 1,000 meters. A pair of Cowgirls came away with first-place finishes, including Savannah Camacho in the 1,000 meters at 2:54.77 and Emily Helms in the mile at 5:17.49.
Last Time Out – 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships
Oklahoma State's Kirubel Erassa finished second in the men's 3,000 meters, and Cowgirls Savannah Camacho and Kaela Edwards took second and third in the women's 800 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday.
The men finished sixth in the team standings, with 20 points, which is OSU's second-highest team finish in school history, behind a second-place finish in 1965. It's the fourth indoor top-10 finish for the Cowboys, and second in a row. OSU scored 20 points in 2013 as well, finishing eighth.
The women finished 15th in the team standings, with 14 points. It's the second-best women's team finish in school history, as well, behind a 13th-place finish in 1989. This is the first time in school history the OSU men and women each earned top-15 team finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Erassa (8:13.08), in a race he did not originally qualify for and entered due to a late scratch, jumped out to the lead for the first half of the 3,000 meters. With three laps to go, Erassa fell to fifth, but fought back. With a big kick going into the final lap, Erassa was able to separate himself from the chase pack and claim second place.
This is the second-straight year Erassa has been a First Team All-American in the indoor 3,000 meters. He took third place in the 2013 meet.
Camacho (2:05.53) and Edwards (2:05.72) became the first OSU women to be First Team All-Americans in the same event at the same NCAA Indoor Championships since 1997. They crossed the finish line together, in the same fashion as they did when they finished 1-2 at the Razorback Invite, which is where they earned their NCAA-qualifying times.
