The Oklahoma State Athletics department kicked off its “A Week of Giving” campaign on Monday, beginning a series of initiatives aimed toward giving back to Stillwater and communities throughout Payne County.
The week-long event, which will continue through Friday, Dec. 6, marks the first phase of OSU's “Orange & Black Gives Back” campaign, a community outreach program designed to acknowledge communities closely associated with each of the school's 18 athletic teams. Members of OSU Athletics will directly involve themselves in the program by assisting with volunteer efforts throughout the community.
“Fans of Oklahoma State Athletics have given us years of support, so this program gives us the unique chance to return our appreciation and strengthen our commitment to the Stillwater-area and surrounding communities,” Assistant Director of Marketing and Promotions Alex Maun said. “This program will also help to enrich the lives of our student athletes by providing a platform to pay it forward and contribute through service and outreach activities.”
Members of the men's basketball, cross country, soccer and softball teams actively participated in community efforts on Monday, highlighted by trips to Sangre Ridge Elementary, Richmond Elementary and the Oklahoma WONDERtorium. Volunteers helped with a wide range of activities, including reading to Pre-K classes, helping with Christmas decorations and holiday toys and speaking to local elementary school students before class.
In conjunction with Stillwater Area United Way, Oklahoma State student-athletes, coaches and staff, including representatives from 15 different sports teams, will visit more than 100 individuals during the week at more than ten different areas of community influence in Stillwater, including United Way partner agencies such as Mobile Meals of Stillwater, the Salvation Army and the Stillwater Humane Society.
“Orange & Black Gives Back” serves as a foundation for all community outreach activities within Oklahoma State Athletics.
